Discussion:

A jacket will be needed for your Friday commute as winds will be out the southwest around 15-20 mph, but will help warm temperatures into the low 60s. A cold front will move through our area Friday night and keep temperatures on Saturday in the 30s. Sunday will be pleasant with limited cloud cover and weak southerly winds as temperatures bounce back near 50.

Technical Discussion:

A blend of both the 06Z run of the NAM and GFS were utilized for this forecast. There was close agreement between the models regarding synoptic scale features, resulting in higher confidence for foretasted temperatures and cloud cover. The problem for our forecast period is the strong winds expected Friday afternoon.

At 250mb and 500 mb, we are tracking a developing shortwave trough moving over the northern plains and an area of high pressure is currently located across the mid-atlantic. With clockwise flow around the high and southerly flow ahead of our approaching trough, winds will be strong today out the southwest as a powerful low level jet will develop over our area. Therefore, a wind advisory has been issued with gusts up to 40 mph expected. Due to the strong southerly winds, temperatures will climb into the low 60s this afternoon. Throughout most of the day, stratus clouds will be present out ahead of an approaching cold front associated with the aforementioned shortwave.

For tonight, the cold front will make its way through our area and quickly drop our temperatures due to the cold air advection left behind. Cloud cover will begin to departure as the front exits the region and allow for northwesterly flow to bring temperatures down into the mid 20s. For Saturday, high pressure will begin to build in over the central CONUS, providing calmer winds at the surface and cooler temperatures. A few upper level clouds are possible, but expect a good deal of sunshine with high temperatures expected to be in the upper 30s.

For Saturday night, the area of high pressure will slide off to the east, but cooler air will continue to be felt as lows will be in the mid 20s. On Sunday, the high pressure will continue to move east and help bring southerly winds on the backside. Temperatures are expected to be right around average (avg high. 48) Sunday afternoon as calm winds and sunny conditions will provide for a plesident end to the weekend.

Heading into Monday, future forecast shifts should monitor a shortwave that will develop over the southern plains and bring an increase in cloud cover and rain chances to our area.
