Discussion:

A snowy morning awaits Columbia residents following the winter system that affected the Midwest the past 24 hours. Some roads remain slightly hazardous across the city this morning, after the city recorded a little over 4 inches of snow. Calmer weather is ahead the next few days though. Clearing skies today and a northerly breeze will affect temperatures today and tonight, before a wind shift and sunny skies late Saturday afternoon will dramatically warm the area on Sunday.

Technical Discussion:

The 06Z run of the GFS was consulted for this forecast due to the accurate handling of morning low temperatures. GEFS plumes display better consensus than SREF plumes as well. Snow totals reached ~4 in. from the winter system that exited the region early this morning. Northerly flow following the cold front is keeping temperatures cold at the present, and visible satellite imagery shows a band of clouds stretching northwest from New Mexico across Missouri and into the eastern Great Lakes region. Southwest flow aloft today will shift northwesterly as an upper level trough passes over the region today. Moisture vacates the region later this morning, and skies will be clear for the majority of the forecast period. Strong CAA and clear skies will lead to cold low temperatures tonight and temperatures that remain below freezing Saturday. Saturday afternoon and evening a surface high will move past the region, and a low begins to develop near the Rockies. The flow associated with these features will rapidly warm and slightly moisten the forecast area beginning early Sunday morning. Warm temperatures closing out the weekend over the Plains will set the stage for next week as the surface low to our west develops.
