Discussion:

This weekend, we welcome a high pressure system that will bring us sunny days and increased temperatures. On Friday37 we'll see decreasing clouds throughout the afternoon with temperatures in the upper 30's. Friday night will be below freezing due to there being no clouds to insulate our atmosphere. However, we will see the Saturday high increase to the upper 40's due to winds shifting from the north to the south and a clear sky. Saturday night, the temperatures will be below freezing again with no clouds until about sunrise when we may see some upper level clouds develop. Sunday will see some spring-like temperatures and increasing clouds into the evening.

Technical Discussion:

The main weather activity we’re looking at this weekend is the high pressure system moving into and staying over MO. This will keep our sky clear and sunny while also increasing our temperatures over the course of the weekend. Both the GFS and the NAM were used to construct this forecast, and overall showed much agreement for the forecast period.

Friday morning, a deep positively titled, long wave trough stretches from Eastern MN into northern TX in the upper levels. This pattern supports northerly flow through Friday. The low resulting from this trough does not move through MO, but rather to our south.

As the low pressure system tracks east, it becomes a closed low over the TX, AR, LA area on Saturday. Surface high pressure east of the forecast area builds in, while bringing in a southerly flow at the surface.

Soundings indicate lower level winds from the north until about 12Z on Saturday, when winds come from the south and the southwest for the rest of the forecast period. This is one factor increasing the temperatures throughout the weekend.

This northerly flow and high pressure leads to a clear sky Friday night, keeping daytime temperatures in the high 30s and dropping into the low 20s overnight. As the high pressure return flow begins to take effect early Saturday morning, some WAA is expected.

Despite this southerly flow in the lower levels on Saturday, the upper levels take a westerly flow on Sunday, near the end of our forecast period. Due to this veering pattern and dry conditions, the sky should be clear during insolation hours, raising temperatures this weekend into the upper 40s and lower 50s on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
