Discussion:

The warmth will continue into this weekend due to southerly winds across the region. A few waves of rain will skirt our region to the north across Iowa and northern parts of Missouri throughout the weekend, but we will likely stay dry. This will bring an increase in clouds from Friday night into Sunday. For those headed to the football game this Saturday, expect partly cloudy skies with increasing temperatures throughout the game.

Technical Discussion:

The Friday morning Campus Weather Forecast was created using a blend of both the NAM and the GFS models from 06Z. The NAM model was used for precipitation and cloud cover throughout the period, while the GFS was our model solution for temperature trends.

A few minor shortwave disturbances will transverse across the upper Midwest beginning late tonight and continue into the day on Sunday. These disturbances are evident at 500mb with pockets of vorticity skirting just to the north of central Missouri. At 700mb, moisture return is evident, but mainly throughout the evening and overnight periods of our forecast period, so we'll keep the sky generally sunny throughout the weekend. Any appreciable moisture and accompanied rainfall will stay to our north across portions of northern Missouri and southern Iowa through Sunday, as a few shortwaves drift through the region, and as the low-level jetsream moves south into Missouri.

As for temperatures, a wind shift back to the south and west, along with open sky and late summer sunshine should take temperatures throughout the upcoming weekend into the upper 80s and low 90s.

By Sunday afternoon, the upper-level ridge at 300mb builds into the southern plains, and that will help encourage temperatures to warm past seasonal averages as we move into early next week, with record high temperatures in jeopardy.
