Discussion:

Make sure to pack your umbrella along with a jacket today as scattered rain showers are possible until the evening hours. The cloud cover will not allow our temperatures to warm up past 65, yet by Saturday we will be back to dry and sunny weather, with temperatures warming back up to the mid-80s. A cold front will knock our temperatures back to average on Sunday as we will be in the upper 70s during the afternoon with a few clouds around.

Technical Discussion:

The 06Z run of the NAM and GFS were used for this forecast, but due to the inconsistency of both temperatures and precipitation, we used a mixture of both models. We beleived the NAM was cold biased and the GFS was warm biased for temperatures.

Early Friday morning, we are watching a shortwave track across the upper Midwest. Pockets of divergence at 250mb associated with the shortwave move across our region during the day today. At 700mb and 850mb, areas of moisture move across the area throughout the day and quickly exit overnight. Given the lack of CAPE, showers will be the main feature today with limited thunderstorm potential. At the surface, dry air is in place due to a southeasterly wind component, which will keep precipitation totals light.

Temperatures will struggle to make it into the 60s today with the abundant cloud cover and on and off precipitation. Clouds will diminish overnight after the shortwave moves through, resulting in clear conditions for the remainder of the weekend. A warm front will push northward overnight resulting in above average temperatures for Saturday. Things will quickly turn around as a cold front moves through early Sunday morning bringing temperatures back to average. Seasonal temperatures look to stick around into next week.
